Soloist Rules and Regulations

1. Entry is limited to: Hula schools or na halau only.
2. You may enter only one dancer in each division and may be of either sex (male or female).
3. Divisions as follows:
Keiki 6-12 yrs old
Opio 13- 20 yrs old
Makua 21-49 yrs old
Kupuna 50 and up (only Hula ‘Auana)

a) Contestants in these divisions (Keiki, opio, makua) must perform the Hula Kahiko, and must choose a hula kahiko prior to the passing of our great Queen Lili`uokalani.
b) Time limit is 5 minutes. The time will begin at the utterance of the dancer’s chanting, singing or the first step onto the stage.
c) All contestants must perform the Hula ‘Auana. Choice of hula is open to any Hawaiian Lyric Song.
d) Time limit is 5 minutes. The time will begin on the first word that is chanted, sung or their first step taken onto the stage.
e) Contestants in the keiki, opio, and makua division must participate in an interview with judges on Friday, February 2, 2007. They will be judged and scored accordingly, and this will reflect on their total scores.

4 Kupuna Division (50 and up)

a) All Kupuna will only perform the Hula ‘Auana. Your choice of hula is open to any Hawaiian Lyric Song.
b) Time limit is 7 minutes. Time will begin on the first word that is chanted, sung or their first step taken onto the stage.
c) Interviews: You will not be required.
d) You will need to turn in explanation and details (fact sheets) of your choice of hula ‘auana to the ‘Iolani Luahine Committtee.

Interviews:

a) Are for the judges to have a chance to meet each contestant.
b) You must bring your costumes and adornments for both hula kahiko & hula `auana. If you decide not to bring them, this may reflect on your scoring.
c) Kumu Hula is encouraged to sit in and SILENTLY observe the interview. The interview is intended to encourage Ka olapa (dancer) to learn as much as they can from their Kumu Hula,
d) And, also to COMMUNICATE their knowledge with PRIDE, DIGNITY and RESPECT.

Interview guidelines to help contestants:

a) Hawaiian Manner: poise, grace, and self-confidence.
b) Speak clearly and with lots of confidence.
c) Know the history and meaning of the hula that you will be performing.

d) Know the reason why the particular costume and adornments were chosen for your performance.
e) His/her physical appearance at the interview is very important.
